Ground Screws: A Low-Impact Foundation Option for Bison Bridges

Ground screws (also known as earth screws) are an increasingly popular alternative to traditional concrete foundations. Originally used for garden buildings, small extensions, and light structures, they’re now being recognised as a practical foundation solution for rural and environmentally sensitive bridge projects.

At Bison Bridges, we don’t supply ground screws ourselves — but we do recommend them as a useful option to consider, especially where digging or heavy equipment access is restricted. In many cases, the use of ground screws can make the difference between a project going ahead or being delayed due to site constraints.

Ground screws can be used as the base for bridge abutments, reducing the need for excavation and heavy concrete foundations. This makes them especially valuable in settings such as woodlands, nature reserves, and parkland — areas where protecting tree roots, habitats, or soil structures is a key concern.

Why Consider Ground Screws for Your Bridge Project?

  • No need for excavation – ideal for tree-sensitive or protected sites
  • Quick and clean installation – reduces site disruption
  • Minimal machinery required – suits hard-to-reach or soft ground locations
  • Environmentally friendly – lower carbon footprint than concrete
  • Can enable projects that might otherwise be unviable

We recommend speaking to a reputable ground screw supplier or installer as part of your bridge planning. Used alongside a Bison galvanised steel bridge, ground screws can provide a fast, effective and eco-conscious foundation system.
