Keeping Footpaths Accessible While Preventing Motorbike Access
Dual Adjustment K Barrier – Glenfield, Leicester
The Dual Adjustment K Barrier is designed to prevent unauthorised motorbike and scooter access to footpaths while maintaining safe, inclusive access for pedestrians, wheelchair users, cyclists and pushchairs. This installation in Glenfield, Leicester shows how effective motorcycle access control can protect public spaces without restricting everyday use.
On revisiting the site, the difference was clear. A number of people passed through during our visit, including dog walkers, and a mum with kids and a pushchair. Each passed through the barrier comfortably and without hesitation. The gap allowed natural pedestrian flow, yet it was immediately obvious that a motorcycle handlebar would be too wide to pass.
In brief conversations with some of the regular footpath users, it was understood that since installation of the barriers, the area has remained free from the motorbike problems previously experienced.
This project demonstrates that preventing motorbike access to footpaths does not require compromising accessibility. With adjustable squeeze plates and controlled spacing, the Dual Adjustment K Barrier allows the right users through while keeping illegal motorbikes out.
