Sustainable Platform and Boardwalk Installation: RSPB Middleton Lakes
Client: RSPB Middleton Lakes
Location: Middleton Lakes, Tamworth, Staffordshire, B78 2BB
Project Focus: Sustainable recycled plastic platform and boardwalk replacement
Sector: Environmental Conservation / Wildlife Trust Infrastructure
Overview
In support of RSPB’s long-standing environmental goals, Bison Bridges was commissioned to replace a deteriorated timber platform and boardwalk at the popular Silt Pool Lookout in Middleton Lakes Nature Reserve. The brief was clear: design and install a more durable, low-maintenance alternative that would blend into the natural surroundings and have minimal ecological impact.
Our solution was a 100% recycled and 100% recyclable Re-life plastic platform and boardwalk, supported by low-impact ground screw foundations — a perfect fit for wetland environments and nature-sensitive sites.
Project Requirements
- Dismantle and dispose of an existing decayed timber platform and adjacent boardwalk
- Supply and install a like-for-like structure using sustainable, long-life materials
- Avoid excavation or heavy machinery that could disrupt habitats
- Ensure safe, non-slip public access and seating
- Deliver a solution that aligns with the RSPB’s ecological values
Materials That Last: Why Re-life Plastic?
For this project, Bison Bridges selected Re-life plastic, a high-quality material that is:
- 100% recycled and 100% recyclable
- Splinter-free and rot-proof, even in consistently wet environments
- Extremely durable, making it ideal for high-footfall public sites
- Low-maintenance, with no painting or treatment required over time
By replacing timber with Re-life recycled plastic, we ensured the new platform offers long-term resilience without compromising on appearance or function.
Construction Highlights
Our experienced team delivered a complete removal and rebuild solution using a sustainable approach.
Key build elements included:
- Ground screws, installed to layout drawing – no concrete, no digging
- Re-life plastic bearers, bolted between supports
- Re-Life joists, mounted on bearers and screwed for strength
- Re-life deck boards, offering safe, slip-resistant access
- Re-Life kickrails, for added security along both sides of the deck
- A dual-rail barrier and top leaning rail, creating a safe, comfortable viewing point
- 3 fixed benches, crafted from Re-life plastic to replicate the original timber design
A Low-Impact Foundation System
To support this eco-friendly structure, Bison Bridges used a ground screw foundation system, eliminating the need for excavation or concrete. Ground screws offer:
- Immediate load-bearing capacity
- Minimal ground disturbance
- Year-round installation, even in wet or remote locations
- Reduced embodied carbon, compared to concrete bases
Together with recycled plastic materials, this approach provides a truly sustainable, long-life solution for outdoor platforms and boardwalks.
Project Outcome
The new platform and boardwalk deliver enhanced safety, stability, and environmental performance. Visitors to RSPB Middleton Lakes can now enjoy a splinter-free, rot-proof, and weather-resistant structure that fits effortlessly into the reserve’s landscape.
With no ongoing treatment or upkeep required, the RSPB team can focus on conservation — not repairs.
