Recycled Plastic Footbridge Installation at RSPB Middleton Lakes

Bison supplied and installed a 7-metre span pedestrian bridge at RSPB Middleton Lakes, replacing a failed structure on a well-used public footpath within the reserve.

Located at What3Words: ///boil.lifted.laws, the bridge sits within a busy visitor route, used regularly by RSPB members and the general public exploring this important wetland habitat.

Bridge Replacement in a High-Use Nature Reserve

The existing bridge had reached the end of its serviceable life and required full replacement. Given the high footfall in this area, the project needed to be delivered quickly and efficiently to minimise disruption to visitors and maintain access across the reserve.

Works included removal of the old structure, installation of new in-situ concrete abutments, and positioning of the new bridge, all carefully planned to reduce downtime and keep the route operational as much as possible.

Durable Footbridge Designed for Wetland Conditions

A 7.0 metre recycled plastic Bison bridge was selected as a long-term solution, ideally suited to the damp, shaded conditions at Middleton Lakes.

While a timber bridge may have offered a lower upfront material cost, the environment, with constant moisture, tree cover and limited drying conditions, would have significantly reduced its lifespan.

The installed bridge features:

  • hot-dip galvanised steel beams for structural durability
  • rot-proof recycled plastic decking and components
  • a low-maintenance design suited to year-round outdoor exposure

This combination provides a reliable, long-life pedestrian bridge with minimal ongoing maintenance requirements.
