Mountain Bike Trail Bridges Installed at Cannock Chase

Three new Built by Bison bridges have recently been installed at Birches Valley, Cannock Chase, close to the popular Fairoak Pools.

Built to our dedicated cycle path bridge specification, each structure features angled parapet sides designed around the space and clearance cyclists need when crossing.

Designed for Mountain Bike Trails

A mountain bike trail bridge needs to do more than simply span a stream or uneven section of ground.

Cyclists need enough room to maintain their balance, control the bike and cross confidently without feeling enclosed. The angled parapets provide additional clearance around the rider’s upper body and handlebars, helping the bridge feel more natural as part of the trail.

This distinctive shape also discourages pedestrians from stopping or gathering on the bridge, reducing the risk of the riding line being obstructed as cyclists approach.

It is a straightforward design detail, but one that can make an important difference on busy mountain biking routes.

Bridges Near Fairoak Pools

The bridges are located near Fairoak Pools, one of the best-known features of the Birches Valley area and a popular destination for walkers and cyclists.

The pools are the largest bodies of water on Cannock Chase and form part of a stream system fed by underground springs at the head of Fairoak Valley. Today, the pools and surrounding wetlands provide valuable habitat for amphibians, waterfowl and other wildlife.

The peaceful woodland setting also has a much more industrial past. Fairoak Valley was the site of a colliery during the late 19th century, and traces of Cannock Chase’s coal-mining history can still be found along the route.

It is an interesting backdrop for the new bridges: structures designed for modern recreation in a landscape shaped by industry, forestry and nature over many years.

A Practical Cycle Bridge Design

Unlike a conventional pedestrian bridge, a mountain bike trail bridge must respond to the way riders move through the landscape.

The Birches Valley bridges provide:
