Prefabricated Bridges: Pre-Assembled Bison Bridges Delivered Ready to Lift
October 27, 2026
Yes – every Bison bridge can be supplied as a prefabricated bridge, fully pre-assembled and ready to lift. Any bridge in our range from 3.0 m to 16.0 m long can be fully built at our workshop, lifted onto a lorry and craned straight into position on site, regardless of the materials it is made from.
We have always simply called this pre-assembly. But many people searching for a bridge use the terms prefab bridge, prefabricated footbridge or pre-built bridge, so this article explains exactly what that means at Bison and when it makes sense for your project.
What does a prefabricated bridge mean at Bison?
A prefabricated bridge is one that is built off site and delivered as a single, finished structure. At Bison, that means we take the same components that make up our standard bridge kits – beams, cross members, decking and parapets – and assemble them in a controlled workshop environment before dispatch.
Our bridges are normally supplied as a kit, so each part can be carried to a remote location and bolted together in place. Pre-assembly is the alternative: the build happens before the bridge leaves us, and what arrives on site is a complete span ready to set down on its bearings.
You may also see this described as a modular bridge, a pre-built footbridge, a pre-engineered bridge or a drop-in bridge. The result is the same: one lift, one finished crossing.
How the pre-assembly process works
- Specify your bridge. Choose the span, width, decking and parapet style, as you would for any Bison bridge. Our Bridge Specifier is the quickest place to start.
- Workshop build. Our team assembles the complete bridge, checks fixings and finishes, and confirms everything is square and true.
- Loading. The finished bridge is lifted onto the lorry as one unit and secured for transport.
- Delivery and lift. On arrival, the bridge is typically craned off the vehicle and placed directly onto prepared abutments or foundations.
- Final connection. With the span in position, the remaining work is fixing it down and connecting to the approach paths.
Compared with assembling a kit piece by piece, the on-site stage shrinks from a build to a lift.
Why choose a prefab bridge?
Less time on site. Installation that might take a team a day or more of assembly becomes a planned lift, often completed in a matter of hours. That matters when access is time-limited, a path is closed to the public, or contractors are charging by the day.
Fewer on-site risks. Assembling a bridge in place means people working at height, handling heavy beams over uneven ground and, on many sites, working above a watercourse. Moving that work into the workshop removes much of it from the site risk assessment.
Consistent build quality. A workshop gives level ground, the right tools and good light. Every bridge is assembled by people who build Bison bridges routinely, so fixings, alignment and finish are checked before dispatch.
Simpler programming. With the bridge arriving complete, groundworks and the bridge itself can run in parallel. Once the abutments are ready, the crossing can be open the same day it is lifted in.
Less disruption. A shorter install means fewer vehicle movements, less ground damage around the crossing point and a quicker reopening of the route for walkers, cyclists or riders.
Which Bison bridges can be pre-assembled?
All of them. Pre-assembly is a service we offer across the whole range, not a separate product line, so you are not limited in specification by choosing it.
| Option | What’s available pre-assembled |
|---|---|
| Span | Any length from 3.0 m to 16.0 m |
| Bridge type | Pedestrian and cycle, mountain bike and trail and bridleway bridges |
| Structure | Galvanised steel, timber or hybrid builds, e.g. the Steel Parapet Bison Bridge Kit or Timber Bridge Kit |
| Decking | Re-Life recycled plastic, SureGrip-Duo timber or GripMaxx anti-slip |
Popular spans from 3 m to 10 m are held in stock, which means a pre-assembled bridge in these sizes can often be built and dispatched quickly. See Pedestrian Bridges in Stock for Fast UK Delivery for details.
Is a pre-assembled bridge right for your site?
Pre-assembly works best where a lorry and crane can get reasonably close to the crossing point. Before choosing it, check:
- Vehicle access. Can a lorry carrying a bridge of your span reach a suitable unloading point? Gateways, tight bends and soft ground all need considering.
- Crane position. Is there firm, level standing for a crane within reach of the abutments, with no overhead cables in the way?
- Foundations. Abutments or bases should be complete and ready before delivery day so the bridge can be set straight down.
- Landowner and permissions. Agree access routes and any temporary closures in advance.
Where a site is truly remote – deep in woodland, across fields or along a narrow path – our standard kit, or a kit with spliced beams, is usually the better choice. If you are unsure, send us photos and a location and we will advise.
Frequently asked questions
Do Bison sell prefab footbridges?
Yes. Any Bison bridge from 3.0 m to 16.0 m can be supplied fully pre-assembled and delivered ready to lift into place.
Is a prefabricated bridge different from a bridge kit?
The components are identical. The difference is where it is built: a kit is assembled on site, while a prefab bridge is assembled in our workshop and arrives complete.
Can recycled plastic and timber bridges be pre-assembled too?
Yes. Pre-assembly is available whatever the beams, decking or parapets are made from.
How is a pre-assembled bridge installed?
It is usually craned off the delivery vehicle and set directly onto prepared abutments, then fixed down.
How long does installation take?
Once foundations are ready, placing a prefab bridge is typically a matter of hours rather than days. Exact timing depends on site access and crane set-up.
Do I need a crane?
In most cases, yes, or other suitable lifting equipment. If a crane cannot reach your site, a standard kit is the better option.
